Megan and the Music Part ONE

Hi friend!

I'm Megan. I was born and mostly raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, where I currently reside with my boyfriend and three year old son, both named Zachary. My roots are strongly planted in the Upper Tanana Region between Tok, Tetlin and Northway – they are all my home. After a seven year hiatus from school, a few different jobs and many paths later, I find myself back at school and excited to be here.

I’m a floozy when it comes to music. I grew up playing the viola (mainly) and cello (secondly), I loved every bit of it! I also dabbled with the electric guitar and an eighth grade talent show, but we won't talk about that.

I enjoy Otis Redding, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Frank Ocean, Nine Inch Nails, Chopin, Prince and Nancy Sinatra to name a few.

Fairbanks had a wonderful music scene during my late teens and early twenties, it was a good time to live in Fairbanks! Check out the video below of one of my favorite past local bands, the Muldoonies!

I still enjoy going to concerts (both rock and classical) on a regular basis, pre-COVID of course.

Again, I’m really excited to, virtually, be here and genuinely look forward to a semester of wholesome, musical education!

Tsin’ee (Thank you in the Upper Tanana Athabascan Dialect),

  1. A musical floozie! I got a chuckle out of that. I miss going to concerts. I miss performing live (although Zoom is getting pretty comfortable for me). I go through Tok twice a year - except for 2020. Whenever I eat there, I eat at Fast Eddy's.

  2. My family and I lived in Fairbanks for 8 years. We also were in Northway for 3 weeks while my husband worked with IRHA. I kinda miss living up in Fairbanks. Have a great semester!!

  3. Your blog is BEAUTIFUL. I gasped. I loved your voice when writing, it really did somehow feel like we were old friends catching up. I think it's great that your re-establishing yourself in school, though I didn't really take time off, I also consider myself to be re-establishing myself in terms of the student I'd like to be. So looking forward to working together this semester and getting to see more of your beautiful work!

Take a Musical Trip to Mexico!

hi fr ie nd ! Let's take a trip to Mexico and enjoy the  vibrant cultural and traditional aspects of their music!   My first roommate was born and mostly raised in Chihuahua, Mexico. I adored her culture - mostly the language, music, and her mom's cooking! One thing I learned was that Mexico is a country of passion, love, and is certainly family centered. I felt mostly overwhelmed while taking my trip to Mexico to learn more about the music... it goes back many years and it continues to evolve while still holding onto its traditional sounds. Mexico's music was originally dominated by Aztec culture until Mexico was invaded by Cortes and his conquest. Mexico then became a Spanish colony. Mexico's music became a blend of Spanish, Aztecan and also had a bit of African roots to blend together. There are so many musical styles and influences in Mexico that compliment a ranching lifestyle or festive mariachi bands! There is so much more to Mexico's music than ranchera and...

The Innovation and Evolution of Music Videos

hi friend! Let's talk about the innovation and evolution of music videos .  In the early 2000's, music videos were the highlight of my day - before school and after school. The influence music videos had on my everyday life was huge and I'm so grateful for the creativity and effort put into them. I remember my mom always watching VH1's pop up videos, watching the Yellow Submarine (as well as playing all kinds of Beatle's songs in my high school orchestra for fun), and Pink Floyd's The Wall. I was also obsessed with picking apart music videos and finding their hidden meanings behind them, if any. Music videos can change how people perceive music itself and leaves lasting memories to the consumer.

"Pocketful of Rainbows" - a musical analysis.

Hi friend! Elvis, right? He doesn't quite need an introduction. Growing up, Elvis wasn't someone I particularly sought to listen to.  My gramps listened to him often, so Elvis absolutely brings a nostalgic, comforting feeling to me.  This song was featured in the 1960 film,  G.I. Blues starring Elvis himself. When I heard this dreamy song for the first time, it was all over for me. I was in love. "I don't worry Whenever skies are gray above Got a pocketful of rainbows Got a heart full of love." Check out Pocketful of Rainbows for yourself below!
